Pink Skips Grammys but Tweets Love for Johnny Depp While Watching Music's Biggest Night on TV

Pink, Johnny Depp Scott Barbour/Getty Images), Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images

Uh oh. Should Carey Hart be worried?

After all, his wife, Pink, isn't at all shy when it comes to expressing her feelings on Twitter about a certain someone who is clearly not her hubby. Namely, one Johnny Depp.

It seems the singer, who was a nominee at the Grammy Awards on Sunday night, opted to skip the big shindig and simply watch the festivities on TV.

Five things you didn't see during the Grammy Awards telecast

Sure enough, soon after Depp introduced Mumford & Sons, Pink tweeted her admiration for the man.

"I'm sorry honey @hartluck but every time Johnny Depp speaks with that low voice, I can't find my clothes. Oops there they are. #brrrrr," she wrote.

OK then.

Although, it's probably safe to assume Pink was merely speaking on behalf of not just herself but the rest of the female population.

Murdoch hints at Page 3 replacement

11 February 2013 Last updated at 11:17 GMT Samantha Fox Samantha Fox found fame through her career as a Page Three model Media mogul Rupert Murdoch has hinted on Twitter that The Sun's topless women on Page Three may be replaced with a "halfway house" of "glamorous fashionistas".

He was responding to a tweet which said: "Seriously, we are all so over page 3 - it is so last century!"

Murdoch replied: "You maybe [sic] right, don't know but considering."

Campaigners against Page Three have long decried it as sexist while the paper consistently defends its stance.

The photographs of semi-naked women in the paper have been a staple of its pages for more than 40 years so it would be a huge shift in stance for Page Three to be dropped.

News International told the BBC there was currently no comment on the tweet by Murdoch, who is its chairman and chief executive.

A campaign against the photographs, called No More Page Three, said in a tweet responding to Murdoch: "We won't stop until page 3 is finally, permanently, out of the paper but his tweet yesterday is encouraging."

The campaign currently has a petition running which asks the paper's editor Dominic Mohan to drop Page Three, saying: "Dominic, stop showing topless pictures of young women in Britain's most widely read newspaper, stop conditioning your readers to view women as sex objects."

Screen grab of Rupert Murdoch's tweet Murdoch's comments have been trending on Twitter

Mohan told the Leveson Inquiry into media ethics in February 2012 that the photographs had become an established part of British society.

He said: "I think it's meant to represent a youth and freshness and it celebrates natural beauty - we don't have models who have had plastic surgery. It's obviously legal - we're allowed to publish those images and I think it's become quite an innocuous British institution."

He added that "the ultimate sanction lies with the reader" and that he felt the pages were "tolerated by the majority of British society" and that the paper's support of "women's issues" such as cervical cancer screening illustrated it was not "sexist".

Page Three has also been a political issue, and in 1986, Clare Short MP, unsuccessfully tried to persuade the House of Commons to ban the pages from the paper.

Ms Short said in 1997, after The Sun backed Labour's election campaign: "They think it's normal and acceptable to carry daily pictures of half-naked women, which is still revolting - but I'm still glad they're supporting us."

The debate flared up again in 2003 when The Sun got its first female editor, Rebekah Wade, who is now known under her married name of Rebekah Brooks. She fought to keep Page Three.

Last year she resigned as News International's chief executive because of the phone-hacking scandal.

Stars Weigh In On Pope's Resignation

Hollywood funnymen Ricky Gervais, Simon Pegg and David Walliams have seen the funny side of Pope Benedict Xvi's resignation after his surprise announcement hit headlines across the world on Monday (11Feb13).

The 85-year-old religious leader, who was elected Pope in 2005, is to retire within the next two weeks, making him the first head of the Catholic Church to step down in almost 600 years.

Stars including actress Mia Farrow and singers Boy George and Ricky Martin took to Twitter.com to weigh in on the news, but a handful of comics took the chance to poke a little fun at the Pope.

Gervais asked, "Being 'The Pope' means you are married to God. So, is this like a divorce?" and Pegg quipped, "The Pope has resigned! Surely he can only be fired? God?"

The Star Trek actor then joked to his fans, "I think he got headhunted by Buddha... Do you think there was a moment when the Pope was giving mass on the Vatican balcony and thought, 'I'm too old for this s**t'?"

Walliams tweeted, "I have just been asked to be the new Pope. My agent is trying to do a deal with the Vatican as I don't like to work on Sundays."

Actor/comedian Kevin James added, "From now on, when someone snarks you with 'Is the Pope Catholic?' you can say 'He's not even the Pope anymore'..." and funnyman Patton Oswalt suggested Vatican bosses stage a reality Tv talent contest to find a replacement: "Top Pope. Reality competition. Do it, Vatican."

Farrow told followers she is hoping for an open-minded replacement, writing, "Hoping for a more progressive successor - imagine a pope more like Arch Desmond Tutu," and Boy George agreed, adding, "A new radical Pope perhaps? Let's pray!"

International Paralympic Committee president Sir Philip Craven said he was "delighted" about extending the partnership with the channel.

The network's coverage of the London 2012 Paralympics was given high praise.

At its peak, 4.2m tuned in for Oscar Pistorius' gold medal in the T44 400m, with a audiences regularly reaching 2m.

Channel 4 has committed to more than 45 hours of coverage from the Winter Paralympics in Sochi and 500 hours from Rio in Brazil.

Sir Philip added: "With London 2012, Channel 4 created a blueprint for how a commercial broadcaster can raise the profile of Paralympic sport and its athletes to new levels.

"They reached record audiences, in particular young people, identified and developed some fantastic new presenting talent and played a significant role in delivering seismic shifts in attitudes and perceptions towards people with an impairment in the UK."

Popular comedy show The Last Leg, which took a sideways look at the games, will also return for Sochi and Rio.

Channel 4 boss David Abraham said: "The London 2012 Paralympic Games was a landmark moment in the history of broadcasting Paralympic sport.

Cheers! Madonna Joins Instagram, Flashes Cleavage and Sips Martini in First Pics

by Alexis L. Loinaz Today 5:32 AM PST

Madonna Instagram

Madonna's ready to vogue it up on Instagram.

The warhorse diva has joined the photo-centric social-media site, and she's raising her glass to mark the occasion. No, literally—she is.

For one of her first pics, the 54-year-old pop superstar has posted a snap of her sipping a dirty martini while rocking some pretty bangin' bangs.

Madonna vs. Gaga! See who had 2012's biggest tour

"Cheers motherf--kers! I'm on Instagram," she wrote in the caption.

Of course, it wouldn't be Madonna if she didn't at least try to flash some flesh, and she was more than happy to oblige, uploading a close-up pic of some mega cleavage, along with the caption: "Addicted to sweat !!!!!" (Seriously: Madge looks drenched.)

Madonna Instagram

Within days, her account had already racked up an impressive 55,000 followers.

But the singer also posted some surprisingly revealing snaps, including a pic of her scowling onstage with a bloody eye after apparent getting clocked in the face.

Madonna covers Lady Gaga's "Born This Way"

"Accidental Punch to Madonna during 'Gang Bang,'" she captioned the photo.

Ouch.

Well, if there's anything we've learned about the sturdy diva throughout her controversy-prone, roller-coaster career, it's that she definitely knows how to roll with the punches.

Cleaning starts on Moore's Lords art

11 February 2013 Last updated at 12:42 GMT Knife Edge Two Piece, 1962-1965 The sculpture is a familiar sight in political news reports A Henry Moore sculpture opposite the House of Lords is to be restored over an eight-week period, beginning on 16 February.

MPs ruled two years ago that the restoration of Knife Edge Two Piece should be the responsibility of the Parliamentary Art Collection.

Situated on Abingdon Street Gardens, it was gifted to the nation in 1967, but no plans were made for its future care.

It has graffiti on it and an original golden patina has gone black in places.

Natural oxidation of the bronze has also affected its appearance, resulting in "green copper corrosion salts", according to the speaker's advisory committee on works of art.

The artwork is often a backdrop to political news reports filmed outside Parliament.

Surface of the sculpture The surface of the scultpure will have graffiti and pitting carefully removed

All of the conservation work will be undertaken by Rupert Harris Conservation who will work in consultation with The Henry Moore Foundation.

The cost of conservation is £16,190, while making the work site compliant with health and safety regulations will cost a further £15,855. A grant of £11,000 has been received from The Henry Moore Foundation to support the conservation finances, while the remainder will be paid from existing Parliamentary budgets.

Much of the work will be done by hand and will include the removal of the remnants of the protective lacquer and surface dirt. Corrosion and oxidation will be cleaned, taking the sculpture back to bare metal.

Graffiti and pitting caused by corrosion will removed by very carefully rubbing the sculpture, again by hand.

It will then be returned to its original golden brown colour and waxed so it has a protective weatherproof surface.

Conservation will then be ongoing, with regular rewaxing in an effort to maintain the sculpture's improved appearance.

Frank Doran MP, chair of the speaker's committee, said: "After years of neglect and uncertainty, the House of Commons is pleased to be able to help return Moore's important public sculpture to its original condition.

Guidance on restoration

"By undertaking responsibility for the work, Knife Edge Two Piece will be preserved for future generations, as per Moore's intentions."

Anita Feldman, head of collections and exhibitions of The Henry Moore Foundation, added: "Following re-erection of Moore's Arch in Kensington Gardens, this project represents another huge stride in the preservation of Moore's public sculptures in London."

Moore, who died in 1986, said he loved the site where the sculpture was placed "so much that I didn't bother to go and see an alternative site in Hyde Park".

"It is next to a path where people walk and it has a few seats where they can sit and contemplate it," he said.

But not everyone appreciated the sculpture, with former Conservative backbencher Neil Marten asking in the House of Commons why "this lovely part of Westminster should be littered with something that looks like a crashed unidentified flying object".

Restoration had originally been intended to begin on the sculpture in early 2012, to be completed in time for the Olympics.

Taylor Swift mocks Harry Styles?

Taylor Swift appeared to mock her ex-boyfriend Harry Styles during her performance at last night's (10.02.13) Grammy Awards.

Taylor Swift appeared to take a swipe at Harry Styles at last night's (10.02.13) Grammy Awards.

The 23-year-old singer opened the awards ceremony with a circus-themed performance of her recent single 'We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together' and mocked the One Direction singer - who she split from earlier this year - as she ad-libbed during the song.

Using a British accent, she sang: ''So he calls me up and he's like, 'I still love you,' and I'm like, 'I'm sorry, I'm busy opening up the Grammys'. And we're never getting back together, like, ever.''

Taylor wasn't the only star to cause a stir on stage at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Kelly Clarkson made the audience laugh with her speech when she picked up the trophy for Best Pop Vocal Album for her 2012 record 'Stronger', in which she admitted she never expected to win the prize and paid tribute to her ''sexy'' fiance Brandon Blackstock.

She said: ''I got stuck to Miranda Lambert. There's a story and a song. For later, after alcohol. I'm just kidding, children. I get nervous speaking in front of people.

''I didn't know I was going to win because I literally, I was so excited to be in a category with Fun. I have been covering you all summer. I'm sorry, I love that song. I think it's so awesome. I love Pink. Everyone - Adele - that I was in a category with. Miguel, I don't know who the hell you are, but we need to sing together. I mean, good god, that was the sexiest damn thing I've ever seen. What? Anyway, thank you so much, friends, family, label, my manager Narvel [Blackstock, Brandon's father], my fiancé, who is sexy tonight.

''I did not think I was going to win. Thank you!''

Kelly later performed 'The Tennessee Waltz' and (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman' as part of a tribute to Lifetime Achievement Award winners Patti Page and Carole King.

Kate prank call DJ back on air

11 February 2013 Last updated at 04:15 GMT Michael Christian DJ Michael Christian is broadcasting on a radio station in Melbourne One of the two Australian DJs who made a prank call to the London hospital where the Duchess of Cambridge was being treated is back on air.

Michael Christian was suspended two months ago by 2Day-FM in Sydney after the nurse who answered the phone - and believed the callers to be the Queen and Prince Charles - was found dead.

Mr Christian is broadcasting on sister-station Fox FM in Melbourne.

His co-presenter at the time of the prank, Mel Greig, is still off the air.

The duchess was being treated at King Edward VII's Hospital for an extreme form of morning sickness when Mr Christian and Ms Greig made their prank call pretending to be members of the Royal Family.

Jacintha Saldanha answered the call and put them through to another nurse who gave an update on the duchess's condition.

Mrs Saldanha, a 46-year-old wife and mother-of-two, was found hanged three days later. She had left three suicide notes, her inquest revealed as it was opened and adjourned.

Earlier this month the Crown Prosecution Service decided there was insufficient evidence to charge Mr Christian and Ms Greig with manslaughter over Mrs Saldanha's death.

2Day FM is owned by Southern Cross Austereo and its chief executive officer, Rhys Holleran, said: "We are happy to have Michael back on air.

"We have always supported our talent returning to work when appropriate and today marks that occasion for MC [Michael Christian]. We look forward to welcoming Mel Greig back when the time is right."

Kate Middleton Prank Call Tragedy: Suspended Australian DJ Back on the Air

Kate Middleton, DJ Michael Christian, Mel Greig Arthur Edwards/WPA Pool/Getty Images; 2Day FM

One of Kate Middleton's hoaxsters has been reinstated.

Michael Christian, the Australia DJ who, along with partner Mel Greig, was suspended in December after a prank call they placed to the pregnant Duchess of Cambridge's London hospital prompted a nurse there to commit suicide, is back on the job.

Per Oz's Radio Today, Christian has resumed his duties—this time hosting Melbourne-based FoxFM's morning show. No word yet when Greig will return to work.

"We are happy to have Michael back on air," said Rhys Holleran, CEO of the station's owner, Austereo. "We have always supported our talent returning to work when appropriate, and today marks that occasion for Michael. We look forward to welcoming Mel Greig back when the time is right."

Kate Middleton prank call fallout: Australian DJs' radio show canceled in wake of nurse's suicide

The radio personalities sparked outrage after placing a call to London's King Edward VII Hospital—where Kate was being treated for an acute form of morning sickness—in which they pretended to be Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles in order to glean information about the royal's condition.

Christian and Greig quickly apologized for the joke and took down a recording of their conversation with the staffers. Sadly, however, Jacintha Saldanha—one of the workers who put their call through to nurses who divulged private details about Middleton's condition—took her own life three days later.

Consequently, the duo's Hot 30 program on Sydney's 2DayFM was axed, and the two were forced to take a leave of absence.

Luckily for them, an investigation by the U.K.'s Crown Prosecution Service found no evidence to support a possible manslaughter charge against them, and they were off the hook—though not before they expressed their deep regret over Saldanha's death.

Keith Urban's home life was good Idol preparation

Keith Urban has admitted living in a 'literal oestrogen nest' with wife Nicole Kidman and their two daughters prepared him for the 'American Idol' feud between Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj.

Keith Urban's all-female household prepared him well for 'American Idol'

The 45-year-old singer - who sits in between warring pop divas Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey on the panel of the singing competition - revealed that living in a ''literal oestrogen nest'' with wife Nicole Kidman and their two daughters, Sunday Rose, four, and Faith, two, helped him handle the on-set antics between his fellow judges.

Asked how he copes with Mariah and Nicki while on the red carpet at the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles last night (10.02.13), his Hollywood starlet wife quipped: ''A four year old and a two year old and a wife, a lot of girls in our household.''

Keith added: ''A literal oestrogen nest is where I live.''

Despite the drama between the 'Triumphant' singer and the 'Starships' hitmaker, Nicole admitted her husband loves working on the reality singing show - which is also judged by Randy Jackson - and gets along well with his colleagues.

She said: ''He adores [Mariah and Nicki], actually. He actually always comes and says he loves doing [the show] and he's used to it. He likes strong personalities.''

It looks as though there will be harmony on the 'Idol' set, however, as Keith reports that things have calmed down between his co-judges.

He said: ''Absolutely, yeah [it's calmed down]. I think the live show's going to be a blast.''

BAFTA’s Best Dressed: Who Shined Brightest On A Wet Night In London? (Pictures)

Gemma Arterton, BAFTAS, 2013If Looks Could Kill! Gemma Arterton Eyes Up Young Actress Juno Temple

The Hollywood glitterati must have wondered why they’d bothered to turn up for the BAFTAs at the Royal Opera House in London on Sunday night (February 10, 2013). On a frankly dismal evening in the nation’s capital, umbrellas were commonplace on the red-carpet with publicists, media types and event organisers running around like headless chickens, hastily attempting to give the press pack their photographs without drowning the likes of Jennifer Lawrence, Jennifer Chastain and Helen Mirren in the cold British rain and sleet. Best pals George Clooney and Ben Affleck were seen taking shelter under the same umbrella, while actress Gemma Arterton looked absolutely freezing as she waited for up-and-coming star Juno Temple to finish working it for the cameras.

In terms of awards, it was a relatively straight-forward evening, hosted with typical panache by everyone’s favourite Briton, Stephen Fry. Ang Lee’s Life of Pi performed strongly in the technical categories – as it is expected to do at the Oscars later this month – while Skyfall won Best British Film. However, it was Ben Affleck’s Argo that took the evening’s key prize – that of Best Picture – leaving Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln to settle for Best Actor, for the peerless Daniel Day-Lewis. Best Actress went to the 85-year-old Emmanuelle Riva, which left Jennifer Lawrence and Silver Linings Playbook director David O’Russell looking quite frankly bemused.

Marion Cotillard, BAFTAS dress, 2013Marion Cotillard Stuns In A Dior Dress At The BAFTAs 2013

Anyway, forget all that, because we all know the evening’s top award was the unofficial title of Best Dressed, for the women anyway. Sure Day-Lewis, Cooper, Affleck and George Clooney looked pretty suave, but they all opted for the traditional BAFTA’s tuxedo.

So who stood out amongst the actresses?

French actress Marion Cotillard – nominated for her role in French flick Rust & Bone – went truly against the grain, opting for a summery bright yellow gown by Dior. Of course, it  didn’t quite fit with the blustery London weather, though we here at Contactmusic.com think Marion did a great job of making everyone feel a little bit more cheery. Whereas most went for conservative black ball gowns, the Oscar winner opted for over-sized frills and sheer panelling. It was probably the best looking Dior gown on show, though Silver Linings star Jennifer Lawrence also looked pretty elegant in a strapless dress from the French design house. However, it looked as though she’d been drenched by the downpour – or was her hair supposed to be like that?

Jennifer Lawrence, BAFTAs dress, 2013Jennifer Lawrence Impressed With Her Dress At The BAFTA's, But The Hair?

Jessica Chastain has featured regularly in our unfortunate Worst Dressed lists during this year’s awards season, though she got it spot on at the BAFTAs on Sunday. Maybe she just put more effort in having been tipped to win Best Actress for Zero Dark Thirty? Anyway, the actress opted for a rather bold bright blue gown by Roland Mouret. It complimented her auburn locks perfectly and Chastain appeared to be making the most of the star-studded evening, despite the weather. Good to see!

Though the Hollywood newcomers were in strong form, the old-guard are clearly unwilling to give up the game just yet. Dame Helen Mirren courted mixed reviews for her pink rinse, though we’re willing to forgive that as the actress certainly got it right with her floor length Nicholas Oakwell floor length gown. On the hair, Mirren told the Daily Mail, “I just thought it would be fun to dye my hair pink. I mean, honestly, I was watching America’s Next Top Model and the season where there were the British girls…Well, the British girl (Sophie Sumner) who won, she had pink hair, and I thought: "That looks really pretty." So I’m copying her, basically.”

Jessica Chastain, BAFTAs Dress, 2013Helen Mirren, Pink Hair, Baftas 2013

Finally! Jessica Chastain Was Amongst The Best Dressed At The BAFTAs [L] and Helen Mirren Divided Opinion With Her Pink Rinse [R]

Elsewhere, good old Sarah Jessica Parker showed the Brits how to do it, wearing a subtle Elie Saab jumpsuit, and the stunning Elizabeth Olsen wowed in a Chanel Haute Couture gown from the autumn-winter collection. The sister of Mary-Kate and Ashley was up for the rising star award, though eventually lost out to Juno Temple, who herself impressed in an Agent Provocateur dress and a Chanel jacket.

All in all, it was a pretty impressive array of sartorial choices at the BAFTAs, though if we had to crown one actress Queen of the Red Carpet, it’d have to be Cotillard. Or Chastain.

Kelly Brook Causes A Stir With Danny Cipriani Photo

Kelly Brook has shared photos of herself and her ex-boyfriend Danny Cipriani online following their night out in public at a BAFTA pre-party in London on Saturday evening (09.02.13).

Kelly Brook has shared photos of herself and her ex-boyfriend Danny Cipriani following their night out together on Saturday (09.02.13).

The 33-year-old model and her former flame unveiled their rekindled romance by making a public appearance at a BAFTA pre-party in London's Annabel's club at the weekend and the brunette beauty posted several photographs of them together on Instagram the following day (10.02.13), with one showing her cupping Danny's face affectionately.

Although Kelly split from her boyfriend of 20-months, Thom Evans, just weeks ago, she and Danny are said to be giving their relationship another go after breaking up in 2010 as the pair have become more ''serious'' about their future.

A source told The People newspaper: ''They have now decided to make a proper go of their relationship. When Kelly and Thom split she became really close to Danny and things changed into something more serious.

''Kelly and Danny never really got over one another when they broke up. She is the love of Danny's life and he always hoped they'd get back together. He is so happy that they are now once again in each other's arms. He'll be hoping they have a long future together.''

Kelly also sparked speculation the pair have reunited after captioning one photograph: ''Happy Chinese New Year #New Beginnings (sic)''

The pair continued their night after the A-list bash by heading to Base nightclub, where they didn't leave until the early hours of the morning and arrived back at Kelly's home at 4.30am.

Another photo showing the closeness of the pair on Kelly's account was captioned: ''Fun Night at Annabels Pre BAFTA/Chanel Party!! 4am #HoldingOn!!! (sic)''

Kelly and the rugby star have allegedly been meeting in secret over the last few months while Kelly was still with Thom.

However, Kelly was adamant her and Thom had not split up due to a ''third party'' being involved.

She tweeted on February 1: ''Thom and I mutually agreed to go our separate ways some time ago. It had absolutely nothing to do with a third party. (sic)''

Joan Armatrading backs new singers

11 February 2013 Last updated at 09:00 GMT By Peter Coulter BBC News, Belfast Joan Armatrading Joan Armatrading gave 56 upcoming singer-songwriters the opportunity to support her on her most recent tour. It is always a struggle for new singer-songwriters to get noticed in the industry but over the last few months Grammy Award nominee Joan Armatrading has been giving the next generation of stars a rare opportunity.

It is an opportunity that two young singers from Northern Ireland, who feature in an upcoming documentary, were lucky enough to receive.

"I've always been convinced that there are plenty of acts out there, solo artists and bands who are brilliant and they write their own music but who are not getting heard or at least not heard by very big audiences," Joan said.

"I thought I would like to try and help them," she said.

"I put out the word that I was looking for local acts, 56 of them to support me on the tour."

'Expressing emotion'

Two of those acts, Jason Clarke and Triona, who supported Joan feature in a new BBC Radio 2 documentary which follows their journey ahead of their performances.

Caitriona Carville, whose stage name is Triona, is 16, is from Teconnaught, outside Downpatrick, County Down. She began singing at an early age and performs in bars across Northern Ireland.

She supported Joan at her concert at Vicar Street in Dublin.

Joan and Triona Caitriona Carville, aka Triona, was chosen by Joan to support her at her concert in Dublin.

Triona is from a large family, she is one of eight children and has almost 80 first cousins so family sing-alongs have become a bit of a choir event.

"My family were delighted when they found out Joan had selected me, they thought it was a great opportunity.

"I've been song writing since I was 14, it's in my blood, my uncles and my dad all do song writing, it's just a way of expressing emotion," she said.

Triona writes her own songs and has recently released her first EP which she has been distributing to local radio stations.

"One song I wrote was about my brother going away to Australia, because we are such a close family and I decided to write a song," she said.

"It's called Please Come Home and well it didn't really work - he got his citizenship not that long ago."

Triona's parents are closely involved in their daughter's career and both of them are helping her.

For dad William, helping Triona has given him a new lease of life.

"A lot of years back I was having a wee bit of bother with drink so I stopped drinking and to keep my head occupied I lifted the guitar.

"Caitriona was the only one who couldn't escape because she was in a baby bouncer and I think that's when she was programmed with music. Her wee foot was just going to the beat.

"Looking back I've seen both sides of life. I've seen the pain, the downside, the depression with alcohol. I thought my life was over. Well now it's good fun. I wake up every morning and I'm happy," he said.

"Her singing has given me a new lease of life, travelling with her, setting up her gigs and doing all the things we are doing together."

As Triona's career begins to blossom, it brings challenges as well. Joan offered her some advice ahead of the gig.

"Joan has been a great help, she advised me to keep doing what I was doing. Keep gigging and to have the faith.

"She was also giving me advice on contracts and management and the business side of things," said Triona.

Triona's mum, Caitriona Sr, has some concerns about her daughter being taken advantage of in what is traditionally seen as a very tough industry.

"I've spent 29 years raising my children and I don't give them up easy," she said.

Jason Clarke Jason Clarke and Joan Armatrading Jason Clarke first met Joan at Anfield in Liverpool. He supported her at her concert in Londonderry.

Jason Clarke, 26, from Belfast, works for a soft drinks company and he supported Joan with his band at the Millennium Forum in Londonderry.

"I read online that Joan was looking for acts to support her. I've grown up listening to her and thought it would be an honour to support her," he said.

"She listened to every single entry and chose some to support her. She wanted to give exposure to new acts to her audiences, which are always sold out. She also released a compilation CD with all of our songs on it," he said.

Jason said the first time he met Joan he was surprised how much she knew about him.

"We met Joan initially at Anfield in Liverpool. I was at the catering van and out of the corner of my eye I saw Joan. She came straight over to me and said 'Hello Jason, I really like your songs', then she listed the four songs on my EP and she said she liked my music video. I couldn't believe it, she had such a genuine interest in me and my music," he said.

"She is very welcoming. When we got to Derry she came straight out to see me and chatted away, she wasn't one of these divas who hid away in her dressing room. it was like talking to your auntie."

Jason explained how his love for music began at an early age.

"When I was aged 10 or 11 at primary school I fancied this girl and she was in the choir so I thought I would maybe join the choir just so I could talk to her for the first time and from there I just started singing and the choir master saw something and asked me to do a solo in the school play that year. That's where it began.

"I went onto Methody and started writing poems and then turned them into songs," he said.

"Supporting Joan was a great experience. When she came on stage she was very kind and talked about how she liked my music."

Armatrading's Singer Songwriters will be broadcast on BBC Radio 2 on 11 February 2013 at 23:00 GMT. More information about the 56 singer-songwriters can be found on the Local Talent UK website.

Secrets of the 2013 Grammy Awards: 5 Things You Didn't See on TV!

by Marc Malkin Sun., Feb. 10, 2013 10:36 PM PST

Casper Smart, Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban, Grammys Christopher Polk/Getty Images for NARAS No doubt you saw some hot performances tonight at the Grammys (hello, Taylor Swift and Justin Timberlake!), but there was also dishy action going on when the cameras weren't rolling.

Here, we give you five things you didn't see on TV:

Grammys Trend Alert! Light Jackets

1. They Really Put J.T. to Work: With just seconds to go for the start of the show, it was Timberlake who walked onto the stage, grabbed a mic and announced, "Ladies and gentlemen, please take your seats!"

Justin Timberlake, Jay-Z, Grammys, Performance Kevin Winter/Getty Images 2. And They Always Have: Speaking of Mr. Timberlake, a Grammys producer gave him a shoutout before the show started to thank him when he "saved our ass when something unfortunate happened four years ago."

If you remember, it was the year Timberlake replaced Chris Brown at the last-minute for a performance of "Let's Stay Together" with Al Green, the year Brown was arrested and Rihanna went to the hospital.

Bruno Mars & Rihanna's 2013  Tribute: Bob Marley's All-Star Set With Sting and Ziggy Marley!

Fun., Grammy Winner Kevin Winter/Getty Images 3. Girls Rule: Lena Dunham was in the house tonight to support her boyfriend, fun. bassist Jack Antonoff. And she let him shine. She didn't do press and rushed into the auditorium just before the band's rain-soaked performance. She was one of the first to jump up to give them a standing ovation.

Later, Dunham and Antonoff were full of PDA, rubbing each other's back and stealing kisses.

2013 Grammy Awards Winners: The Complete List

4. J.Lo Is Flexible: Last minute change of plans for Jennifer Lopez and Pitbull. Their bit was originally supposed to have Pitbull take the stage wearing a shirt open to his navel with J. Lo cracking, "I guess you didn't get the memo." Instead it was Lopez, of course, showing the skin tonight in her slit-up-to-there Anthony Vaccarello dress.

Portia de Rossi, Ellen DeGeneres, Katy Perry, Grammys Christopher Polk/Getty Images 5. It's Like Pretty Much Any Concert: Coming out of one dressing room backstage was the smell of the stuff that Justin Bieber promises to never smoke again. Kelly Clarkson got a whiff as she strolled by. "Whoa," she said, waving her hand in front of her nose.

Close by, Ellen DeGeneres sat on the floor strumming a guitar with a cup full of money.

Jeremy Irvine: Ben Affleck is inspiring in 'fickle' industry

Jeremy Irvine insists the film industry is ''fickle'' but he finds inspiration in BAFTA-winning star Ben Affleck's directing and acting.

Jeremy Irvine believes Ben Affleck should be an inspiration to every movie star in such a ''fickle industry''.

The 'Great Expectations' star thinks the 40-year-old actor - who picked up the Best Film and Best Director prizes at the BAFTA Awards last night (10.02.13) for 'Argo', which he starred in and helmed - is ''someone who people can aspire to''.

Speaking prior to entering the official DISARONNO BAFTA After-Party at the Grosvenor House Ballroom, he told Rick Edwards: ''It's such a fickle industry you know, so it's nice to see someone who people can aspire to.''

Jeremy - who plays main character Pip in the BAFTA-nominated adaptation of Charles Dickens' novel of the same name - was delighted to see British flick 'Les Miserables' take home four BAFTAs including Best Supporting Actress for brunette beauty Anne Hathaway.

He added: ''It was great to see 'Les Mis' get something, and so many British people doing well. It's great.''

And Jeremy's 'War Horse' co-star, Tom Hiddleston, was pleased to see 85-year-old actress Emmanuelle Riva win Best Actress for her performance in the French film, 'Amour', which tells the story of an elderly couple in the twilight of their lives.

When asked whose victory he enjoyed the most, Tom replied: ''I think Emmanuelle Riva, for Best Actress. That category is one of the hardest categories.

''All the Best Actress performers were sensational but her performance in that film ... in Michael Haneke's 'Amour' was one that I couldn't fathom as I was watching it, she was just extraordinary.''

Watch Taylor Swift's Supposed Harry Styles Diss During Grammys Performance

Taylor Swift's Grammys performance of "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" could've been aimed at any number of ex-boyfriends.

But the 23-year-old singer's awkward faux-British accent certainly seemed to be a jab at Harry Styles.

"So he calls me up and he's like, 'I still love you,'" she said mockingly in the middle part of her Alice in Wonderland-themed performance. "And I'm like, 'I'm sorry, I'm busy opening up the Grammys!' And we're never getting back together, like, ever."

See who won big at the 2013 Grammys!

Since Taylor, 23, did part ways with the 19-year-old One Direction boy-bander just last month, it seems fair to assume this little dig was aimed at him. Then again, maybe T.Swizzle's just pulling a Madonna and testing out a British accent for fun.

Curiouser and curiouser!

Check out these candid moments from the 2013 Grammys!

Theatre school faces closure threat

11 February 2013 Last updated at 14:12 GMT Corona Theatre School The school needs 15 full fee paying children to balance its books A theatre school whose alumni include actor Ray Winstone is being forced to close after it lost a donation.

Corona Theatre School in Hampton, south-west London, is down £25,000 a month after its main donor pulled out due to ill health.

Parents of the 32 children who attend the school found out on Sunday.

Principal Mary Greco said she was devastated, adding: "Unless a miracle happens, we can't open after half-term."

Past students also include actors Nicholas Lyndhurst, Dennis Waterman and Charlie Brooks.

The school first got into financial difficulties in July 2011 when it could not afford the lease on a building it was renting.

One of the children's parents offered a donation of £25,000 a month to keep the school open. As it was a donation, no contract was drawn up.

The school has seven academic staff members and five vocational staff. It teaches the national curriculum but also specialises in the performing arts.

Ray Winstone Actor Ray Winstone had attended the school

Ms Greco, who went to the school when she was a child, said many of the children would not cope well with state schools.

"They are all mad as hatters. They're very talented and all want to work in performing arts."

Ms Greco said she had looked at the school becoming an academy however "that takes time and time is what we've run out of".

Teachers have said they will continue to help the five Year 11 students so that they can pass their GCSEs.

Gunilla Karlsen, whose 10-year-old daughter goes to the school, said she was shocked at the news.

"Nothing was communicated. No-one had any idea the school was in financial difficulties," she said.

Ms Karlsen said she did not know where she was going to send her daughter, who is on the autistic spectrum, because she cannot send her to a mainstream school.

"The school as it was was amazing. It has given her aspirations and dreams - now all these dreams have been snatched away."

Identity Thief steals US box office

11 February 2013 Last updated at 11:29 GMT Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy Identity Thief follows Bateman as he chases a con artist played by McCarthy Comedy caper Identity Thief, starring Bridesmaids actress Melissa McCarthy, has defied critics and blizzard conditions to top the US box office.

Despite poor reviews, the comedy earned $36.6m (£23m) at the weekend, becoming the biggest release of the year so far.

Last week's top film, Warm Bodies, fell to number two with $11.5m (£7.3m), while Steven Soderberg's Side Effects debuted with $10m (£6.3m).

Ticket sales were 45% lower than the same three-day period last year.

On a weekend which saw most of the north-east coast of America buried in snow, Universal Pictures said poor weather conditions had a big impact on cinema attendance for its film, Identity Theft.

"It took such a chunk out of the business. But we can't control Mother Nature," said Nikki Rocco, Universal's head of distribution.

Identity Thief "probably could have hit $40m (£25.4m) if it weren't for the weather," he added.

Overall, earnings in the US and Canada were down significantly on the same time last year, when four movies, including a 3D reissue of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, had big openings.

"It's really tough to live up to a weekend like we had last year, said box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian. "It was sort of a foregone conclusion that this was going to be a down weekend."

Identity Thief, which stars Jason Bateman as a man chasing down a con artist, played by McCarthy, was panned by critics with review website, Rotten Tomatoes giving it one star and a 24% rating.

Andrew O'Hehir from Salon.com said the film reached "impressive heights of laziness and idiocy", while The New York Times' Manohla Dargis simply stated: "We deserve better movies".

Others were more forgiving, such as Scott Bowles from USA Today, who argued the film "manages to make off with just enough laughs to work, thanks to the wondrous McCarthy".

Elsewhere in the chart, the Oscar-nominated Silver Linings Playbook was fourth with $6.9m (£4.4m), while Hansel and Gretel, the special-effects take on the children's fairy tale was fifth with $5.7m (£3.6m).

A 3D release of Tom Cruise's 1986 hit Top Gun pulled in $1.9m (£1.2m) at 300 locations.

2013 Grammy Awards: 5 Biggest Jaw-Droppers

Mumford & Sons, Grammys Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images

So, that was...long.

The 55th Annual Grammy Awards was its usual jam-packed self, with host LL Cool J deftly shepherding the three and a half-hour broadcast from concert mode to ceremony and back again while both fresh (Frank Ocean, Gotyefun.!) and familiar (Adele, Elton JohnJustin Timberlake, Rihanna, Rihanna again!) folks took to the stage to accept their accolades or rock the house. Or, sometimes, do both.

But even though we didn't really know what to expect in the first place, there were plenty of surprises—and no one seemed more surprised by who won Grammys this year than the people who actually won them. Here's what popped:

Best & worst of the 2013 Grammy Awards

1. Mum's the Word: Congrats to British folk rockers Mumford & Sons, who first got introduced by Johnny Depp (surprise!) and then made off with Album of the Year for Babel in the face of mounting opposition from fun., winners for Song of the Year and Best New Artist; the Black Keys, whose El Camino was named Best Rock Album (and whose dominance was noted by Marcus Mumford himself); and Frank Ocean, whose Channel Orange was named the first-ever Best Urban Contemporary Album (a category we're pretty sure was created just to set up a cage match between Ocean and Chris Brown). Babel had lost out to Bonnie Raitt's Slipstream for Best Americana Album, so theirs was a surprising—if still well-deserved—victory when it came down to it.

Chris Brown, Rihanna, Grammys Christopher Polk/Getty Images

2. Kiss Kiss: So, this is a thing again. Four years after Chris Brown was arrested for beating her up and two years after Rihanna got a judge to ease up on the restraining order that was preventing him from going near her, the lovebirds were back sitting front-and-center together at the Grammys. Though he was confined to the audience as a spectator (and confined to his seat when Frank Ocean beat him for Best Urban Contemporary Album), Brown gave Rihanna's performance of "Stay" a standing ovation and was on his feet dancing when she joined with Sting, Bruno Mars and Ziggy Marley for a tribute to reggae legend Bob Marley. Let this be a new chapter that has something positive to say about forgiveness and not a stale old track left on repeat, please.

Who was best dressed at the 2013 Grammys?

Gotye, Kimbra, Grammys Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images

3. That Song We Used to Know: Prince was certainly delighted to honor Gotye for Record of the Year, the hoodie-wearing and cane-toting legend purring, "Oh, I love this song," as he turned a Grammy over to the Belgian-Australian artist and duet partner Kimbra. And while it seems like ages since "Somebody That I Used to Know" was the "Some Nights" or "I Knew You Were Trouble" of our favorite radio station, hearing those spare strings and Gotye's mournful, indignant wail made us remember how awesome that song is.

Kelly Clarkson, Grammy Winner Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images

4. Since She's Been Gone: Kelly Clarkson has won Grammys before, so it was rather adorable to see her act so incredibly shocked to win Best Pop Vocal Album for Stronger, topping fun.'s Some Nights, among others, in the process.  "I'm so sorry, I got stuck to Miranda Lambert!" she exclaimed after getting hung up for a sec on her pal's sequined dress and giving Katy Perry a little I'm-not-worthy bow on her way to the stage. "There's a story and a song, for later—after alcohol. I'm just kidding, children. I get nervous speaking in front of people! I didn't know I was going to win! 'Cause I literally, I was so excited to be in a category with fun., I've been covering you all summer. I'm sorry, I love that song. I think it's so awesome. I love Pink. I love everyone—Adele, who I was in a category with. Miguel, I don't know who the hell you are, but we need to sing together. I mean, good God! That was the sexiest damn thing I've ever seen," she said, referring to his earlier performance. "What?! Anyway, thank you so much, friends, family, label, my manager...my fiancĂ©, who is sexy tonight, y'all. I did not think I was gonna win." And, in a lilting high voice, "Thank you!"

Frank Ocean, Jay-Z, The Dream, Grammy Winner Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images

5. Jay-Z Is Just Priceless: In case you needed more proof that Jay-Z is the coolest cat out there, he stole the whole show with one unscripted line. First, he let Frank Ocean and The-Dream have the spotlight when the bunch of them won for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for "No Church in the Wild," figuring he's been the center of the attention for, like, ever and he may as well let his collaborators have their moment. And then, in reference to The-Dream's baseball hat tucked over a cap with "Parental Advisory" stamped all over it, Jay-Z just leaned into the microphone and said, "I would like to thank the swap meet for his hat." Boom. Done.

Jessica Chastain Blasts Jennifer Lawrence Feud Rumors

by Alexis L. Loinaz Today 4:39 AM PST

Zero Dark Thirty, Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Lawrence, Silver Linings Playbook The Weinstein Company, Columbia Pictures

Jessica Chastain wants everyone to know one thing: that there's zero-dark truth to rumors that she's got some beef with Jennifer Lawrence.

The Zero Dark Thirty star is knocking reports that she and the Silver Linings Playbook actress are feuding, as both have been constantly pitted against each other in the run-up to the Oscars later this month, with pundits predicting that the race will ultimately come down to a showdown between the two.

Chastain, 35, has now taken to Facebook to set the record straight, apparently in the wake of a Saturday Night Live monologue in which Lawrence, 22, gives Chastain a playful skewering, but which unnamed "sources" claim has left Chastain seething.

Jessica Chastain's dog makes surprise Broadway debut

"I find it very sad that media makes up bogus stories about women fighting in this industry," she wrote in a post on Sunday. "Filming The Help was the most amazing experience and yet, that is the film I'm most asked about in regards to 'fighting on set.' Why do we support the myth that women are competitive and cannot get along?"

She then goes on to give props to her fellow Oscar nominees, with a special shout-out to Lawrence.

"I think all of the actresses recognized this year have given incredible performances. But more important, they've all shown themselves to be filled with generosity and kindness. I've done two photo shoots with Jennifer Lawrence over the years and have found her to be utterly charming and a great talent. I've told her how beautiful her film work is."

Jennifer Lawrence spills on being rejected by Abercrombie & Fitch for modeling gig

Chastain then closes with a plea for fans to rise above the rumormongering.

"Please don't allow the media to perpetuate the myth that women aren't supportive of each other," she writes. "Every time an actress is celebrated for her great work, I cheer. For the more brilliant their performance, the more the audience demands stories about women. With support and encouragement, we help to inspire this industry to create opportunities for women. And as we all know: a great year for women in film is just a great year for film."

Something tells us Lawrence couldn't agree with her more.

Bafta shares the love

11 February 2013 Last updated at 01:44 GMT By Emma Saunders Entertainment reporter, BBC News Quentin Tarantino Tarantino said he "feels pretty good" with his win This year's Baftas proved to be a night where not one film dominated as some big hitters, including Lincoln and Life of Pi, failed to win big.

Lincoln picked up just one award - predictably for Daniel Day-Lewis as best actor - despite receiving 10 nominations.

Perhaps that was to be expected - a film about a US president was never going to be as popular with British voters as it would be with American ones (watch this space for the Oscars).

And Ang Lee's adaptation of novel Life of Pi only won two out of a possible nine awards - best visual effects and best cinematography.

Musical Les Miserables was the biggest winner of the night with four awards out of a possible nine. But three of those were in the less weighty technical categories: production design, sound and make up and hair.

Anne Hathaway was a favourite to win best supporting actress but said backstage that she was "so surprised" when her name was read out.

"It's my third film in the UK in three years... I've had the most divine experiences and gotten to work with the best of the best."

It was Amour's Emmanuelle Riva who was the big surprise of the night, winning the Bafta for best actress. It was just a shame she couldn't be there to collect it.

The 85-year-old also became the oldest person to win an acting Bafta, beating the record set by last year's best supporting actor winner, Christopher Plummer.

Amour also won best foreign film but again, director Michael Haneke was absent.

Argo continued apace with Ben Affleck - controversially overlooked for a best director Oscar nomination - winning the equivalent Bafta, with his movie also winning the best film prize.

Backstage, Affleck said: "We feel so grateful, I've never been here... to actually win feels incredibly welcoming."

Of the move from acting to directing, he said: "People are sceptical, you have to prove yourself - there have been situations where I was over-exposed... but every movie you start at zero, you start again."

For the last three years, Bafta has picked the film that went on to win best picture at the Academy Awards, which bodes well for Affleck's film about the rescue of American hostages in Iran.

George Clooney, one of Argo's producers, described it as "a thrilling night for us".

The film, which has enjoyed success at the Golden Globes, the SAG awards and the Directors Guild of America awards, also won a Bafta for best editing.

But it wasn't just the Americans having all the fun. Bond movie Skyfall won both outstanding British film and original music in the series' 50th anniversary year.

Like Oscar, Bafta has never been much of a Bond fan - the franchise has had plenty of nominations over the years but only one win, and that was for Ted Moore's cinematography in From Russia With Love in 1963.

Director Sam Mendes said: "It's the icing on the cake... here's to the next 50 years."

Anne Hathaway Hathaway said she was "so surprised" when her name was read out

He added that he would consider making another Bond film.

"If I feel I'm the best person to tell the story, then I'll do it."

Film fans' favourite Quentin Tarantino also celebrated as he picked up the original screenplay Bafta for his western slavery epic, Django Unchained.

Christoph Waltz, who stars as a bounty hunter in the film, was emotional as he paid tribute to his director backstage.

"It's a continuation of a beautiful friendship... if he (Tarantino) has a part for me, I will play it."

Tarantino repaid the compliment: "He's amazing, we're really lucky to find each other."

He hinted at a further revenge movie following the success of Inglourious Basterds and Django.

"There's something about this that begs a trilogy... I don't know what yet but I wouldn't be surprised."

Pixar's Brave won best animation, which could point to an Oscar win later this month in the same category.

'Removing stigma'

"It's great when you do win... dreams come true, there is that validation by your peers," said one of the film's co-directors, Mark Andrews.

David O Russell was rewarded with the best adapted screenplay prize for Silver Linings Playbook, but hotly tipped Oscar contender Jennifer Lawrence and her co-star Bradley Cooper missed out in the acting categories.

The film is about a man with bipolar disorder who forms a relationship with a woman who has recently been widowed.

Russell, who made the film for his son who has bipolar disorder, said: "I know it personally from the inside... (it's about) removing the stigma."

Host Stephen Fry, who has spoken publicly about his own experience of bipolar disorder, paid tribute to Russell after he left the stage.

Fry said the film "de-stigmatises without being preachy, and allows itself to be funny as well as truthful".

While Fry briefly dropped his jovial persona to concentrate on more serious matters, it was left to Tarantino and Hathaway to contemplate the trivial (or not so trivial, depending on your point of view).

Namely, where to put your Bafta.

"My awards are on one big shelf," Tarantino told the media. "But do I put it next to my other Bafta or on the other side?"

Hathaway, on the other hand, had a much more glamorous location in mind: "I think I'm going to get a tool shed and put it in my garage."

Shanty singer 'fighting for life'

11 February 2013 Last updated at 13:40 GMT Fisherman's Friends giving statement in Port Isaac The Fisherman's Friends said friends and families were pulling together following the accident in Surrey on Saturday A Cornish shanty group singer injured in a music venue accident in which the group's tour manager died is "fighting for his life", the group has said.

Fisherman's Friends singer Trevor Grills suffered critical injuries after being hit by a falling metal door at G Live in Guildford, Surrey, on Saturday.

Tour manager Paul McMullen, of Disley in Cheshire, died in the incident.

The group has thanked well-wishers, saying they were "touched and moved" by the response.

'Concern and support'

Police were called to the London Road venue just after 11:45 GMT on Saturday after a report that two men were trapped under a metal door in a loading bay.

The 10-piece group, from Port Isaac, were due on stage that evening.

Officers said Mr McMullen suffered serious injuries to his legs and died at the scene.

Mr Grills was taken by ambulance to St George's Hospital in south London.

The hospital confirmed he was still in a critical condition.

Speaking in Port Isaac, singer Jon Cleave said: "The Fisherman's Friends are very touched and moved by the concern and support shown for our friends, Trevor and Paul.

G Live in Guildford The accident happened at G Live in Guildford

"We would like to express our and Port Isaac's thanks to everyone for that.

"It's part-and-parcel of our Cornish community to pull together, one-and-all, in such times; and that is what we are doing.

"Trevor is fighting for his life in the presence of his family in hospital in Tooting.

"All our love and thoughts are with them at this time."

The Health and Safety Executive said it and Surrey Police were investigating the incident, described by G Live as a "serious accident".

Guildford Borough Council said it was "helping in any way we can during this very difficult and sad time".

It said: "This is a complex area for investigation and our health and safety team will continue to offer any necessary assistance.

"Our building control team will also continue to advise on ensuring the site remains safe."

Angelina Jolie Stuns at Cinematographers' Awards Show

by Alexis L. Loinaz Today 6:47 AM PST

Jennifer Lopez may have been channeling a leg-poppin' Angelina Jolie at the Grammys this past weekend, but the American Society of Cinematographers got the real thing!

Brad Pitt's other half was on hand Sunday at the ASC's annual awards fĂŞte at the Hollywood & Highland Center in Los Angeles, where she handed out trophies to the night's big winners.

Brad Pitt touches down solo in Los Angeles

Jolie looked ravishing in a simple gray belted wrap dress and peep-toe pumps, her hair pulled back into an understated low ponytail.

Beautiful gold pendant earrings, which provided a subtle pop of bling, completed the elegant, unfussy look.

(In case you were wondering, cinematographer Roger Deakins won for Outstanding Achievement in Film for his work on Skyfall, while Game of Thrones, Hunted, Wilfred and Great Expectations also scored some kudos.)

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie spend Christmas vacation on private island with their kids

The 37-year-old Oscar winner has been lying low these last few weeks and staying out of the spotlight. She, Pitt and their six children were most recently spotted heading to a private Caribbean island for their Christmas vacay.

Glad to see the actress bringing her considerable star power back to the red carpet!

Eddie Redmayne's BAFTA Awards Were Sick—as in Food Poisoning

Eddie Redmayne Mike Marsland/WireImage

This probably wasn't the sort of awards show recognition Eddie Redmayne had in mind.

Still, the Les MisĂ©rables actor—or, more accurately, the health of the Les MisĂ©rables actor—was certainly the talk of yesterday's BAFTA Awards.

That's because after the Brit's dashing red carpet arrival at the London ceremony, he was doing a different kind of dashing altogether. Namely, to the backstage bathroom after falling ill with a bout of food poisoning.

Ben Affleck FTW: See who else won big at the BAFTA Awards

Lincoln's Sally Field was first to mention his absence onstage at the Royal Opera House after her would-be copresenter was MIA during their category, leaving her to do the honors solo.

"I was supposed to be out here with Eddie Redmayne, he seems to be puking his guts up back there," she said.

So much for delicacy.

Meanwhile, the star, who understandably remained out of sight most of the night, did get a more pleasant shout-out from the stage, when costar Anne Hathaway accepted her BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress.

"Eddie, feel better," she said. "I'd be holding your hair back, but...you know. Food poisoning's just the worst."

Still, it wasn't a total loss. Les Mis took home four awards in total over the course of the evening.

BBC staff to strike over cuts

11 February 2013 Last updated at 12:46 GMT Employees outside New Broadcasting House Members were balloted before Christmas BBC journalists are to stage a one-day strike on Monday, February 18 in an ongoing row over job cuts.

The National Union of Journalists confirmed the walk-out would take place across the UK, unless the BBC agreed to end compulsory redundancies.

Their members will begin a "work to rule" on Friday as part of the dispute. Other BBC unions have yet to comment.

A BBC spokesperson said it was "disappointing the NUJ have chosen to take this action."

NUJ members were balloted before Christmas over compulsory redundancies set out in a programme of cuts known as Delivering Quality First (DQF). The plans involve more than 2,000 job losses across the BBC over five years.

The NUJ said the BBC was planning around 30 compulsory redundancies, affecting areas including BBC Scotland, the Asian Network, the World Service and English regions.

Michelle Stanistreet, NUJ general secretary, said: "The BBC is prepared to waste public money on needless redundancies rather than secure redeployment opportunities for those at risk.

"This demonstrates the significant failures of some managers to uphold key aspects of the redeployment agreement, let alone the spirit of the deal.

"In the meantime we have meetings planned with the BBC and we want to engage in meaningful negotiations to resolve this dispute. I hope common sense prevails and a sensible solution is agreed which will mean that strike action is not necessary."

A BBC spokesperson said: "We understand how frustrating and difficult situations involving redundancies can be, but it is disappointing the NUJ have chosen to take this action.

"We are working hard to ensure that we succeed in getting staff redeployed wherever we can and will continue to work with the unions to ensure that their members receive the right redeployment support."

Iconic painting vandalised in France

8 February 2013 Last updated at 10:27 GMT Delacroix A visitor is seen here passing Delacroix's Liberty Leading The People at the museum in Lens in December French police have detained a woman accused of defacing an iconic Delacroix painting, Liberty Leading The People, at a branch of the Louvre Museum.

She was held after being seen scrawling a graffiti tag on the painting, a Romantic masterpiece painted in 1830 to celebrate a French uprising.

The museum in the northern town of Lens said the work might easily be cleaned but would be examined by a restorer.

The Louvre Lens museum only opened in the former mining town in December.

The painting by Eugene Delacroix, which featured on the pre-euro, 100-franc French banknote and reportedly inspired the Statue of Liberty in New York, is being exhibited in Lens for a year.

French media quoted unnamed legal sources as saying the graffito was a clear reference to a 9/11 conspiracy theory.

The gallery remained closed to the public on Friday.

'Unstable'

Just before closing time the previous day, a 28-year-old woman scrawled the 30cm (12in) graffito on the bottom of the painting and was immediately detained by a museum guard, France's 20 Minutes news website reported.

The work itself, which commemorates the July Revolution of 1830, measures 325cm by 260cm.

The mark may be "easily cleaned" but a restoration expert was being sent from the parent museum in Paris, the museum said in a statement.

No decision has yet been taken on whether the painting will have to be removed, the museum was quoted as saying by French broadcaster France 3.

The local prosecutor, Philippe Peyroux, told AFP news agency that the woman in custody appeared to be "unstable" and that he had requested a psychiatric examination.

He added that the woman, whose identity has not been released, had a "French-sounding name".

Almeida Theatre makes Goold director

8 February 2013 Last updated at 12:41 GMT Rupert Goold Rupert Goold has been artistic director of Headlong - formerly the Oxford Stage Company - since 2005 Rupert Goold, of the acclaimed theatre company Headlong, is to follow Michael Attenborough as artistic director of London's Almeida Theatre.

Goold - named best director at the 2010 Oliviers for Enron, Lucy Prebble's play about one of the biggest financial scandals in history - said he was "thrilled" at his new appointment.

The London-born Goold has been artistic director of Headlong since 2005.

He will leave the company in August to take up his new role.

Attenborough said he was also "truly thrilled" to hand over the reins to Goold, describing him as "a bold and brilliant director".

His successor, he continued, is "someone who takes equal delight in the promotion of other artists and the same ambitious, progressive programming for which the Almeida has always been known".

"I can pay Rupert no higher compliment than point to the fact that we are co-producing two shows with his company Headlong during my final season up to the end of 2013," added Attenborough.

The first of these will be Chimerica, a new play by Lucy Kirkwood that will have its premiere at the Almeida in May.

That will be followed by American Psycho, a musical version of the novel by Bret Easton Ellis that will have its world premiere in December.

"I look forward to welcoming the best artists from here and abroad to make work in this magical theatre and building on its international reputation for theatre of risk and vision," Goold said.

The former artistic director of Northampton Theatres and associate director at the Royal Shakespeare Company is currently working on his first feature film, True Story, starring James Franco and Jonah Hill.

Attenborough, who has been in charge at the Almeida for 11 years, is stepping down to concentrate on directing.

Notable shows during his tenure include David Eldridge's 2004 adaptation of Danish film Festen and the 2011 staging of Edward Albee's A Delicate Balance.

Richmond landscape in export bar

8 February 2013 Last updated at 13:38 GMT Richmond Hill in the Summer of 1962 The oil painting has been in British collections for 150 years A temporary export bar has been placed on Jasper Francis Cropsey's painting Richmond Hill in the Summer of 1862.

A rare example of a UK-owned British landscape by an American painter, the government needs to raise almost £5 million to keep it in the country.

Lord Inglewood, of the Reviewing Committee on the Export of Works of Art and Objects of Cultural Interest (RCEWA), called it "a rare survivor".

"I hope funds can be raised to save this wonderful painting," he added.

The ruling by Culture Minister Ed Vaizey follows a recommendation to defer export by the RCEWA.

The committe made the decision on the grounds that the painting was of outstanding significance for the study of the relationship between British and American painting in the 19th Century.

Born in New York's Staten Island, Cropsey - a leading light of the 'Hudson River School' of landscape painting - showed regularly at the Royal Academy in the 1950s.

'English beauty'

One early assessment of his Richmond Hill painting said it depicted "a view unsurpassed for its purely English beauty".

Cropsey was forced to sell the piece after he ran up huge debts entertaining in London. The work has remained in Britain ever since.

An earlier export licence application for the painting in February 2000 was withdrawn after the RCEWA recommended that export be deferred for three months to allow time for a potential purchaser to be identified.

Any decision about the painting's current export will now be deferred until 7 April 2013, with a possible extension to 7 August if a serious intention to purchase the painting is found.

Earlier this week a temporary export bar was placed on two works by George Stubbs that gave the 18th Century British public their first chance to see what a kangaroo and a dingo looked like.

Austen classic gets Downton makeover

8 February 2013 Last updated at 10:36 GMT Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth in the 1995 version of Pride and Prejudice Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth starred in the 1995 version of Austen's novel A new novel that retells the story of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice from the point of view of its servants has been sold around the world.

Longbourn, by Jo Baker, was snapped up by US and UK publishers last week.

"Jane Austen was my first experience of grown-up literature," said Baker.

"But as I read and re-read her books, I began to become aware that if I'd been living at the time, I wouldn't have got to go to the ball; I would have been stuck at home with the sewing."

The 39-year-old British author said she drew her inspiration from her family's years in service.

"Aware of that English class thing, Pride and Prejudice begins to read a little differently," she explained.

Longbourn follows a romance between a newly arrived footman and a housemaid in the Bennet household that runs parallel to the love story between Mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet.

"I sent it out last week," said Clare Alexander, Baker's agent. "[US publisher] Knopf bought it Monday. On Wednesday, it was bought by Doubleday in the UK.

"By Thursday the film rights had gone. By Friday, we had signed up two foreign translations."

"Longbourn is a piece of art that emerges from a much-loved classic," said Alexander of Baker's fifth novel.

"It is immensely satisfying to have worked with a talented writer from the outset and to see her take flight. Longbourn will make her a literary star."

Translation rights have been sold in Spain, Italy, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Brazil, France and Sweden, according to the book's UK publisher Transworld.

Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen in the 2005 film of Pride and Prejudice Focus Features were also behind the 2005 film of Pride and Prejudice, starring Keira Knightley

Film rights have been bought by Random House Studio and Focus Features, which distributed the 2005 film version of Pride and Prejudice in the US.

"Jo Baker fully inhabits the lives of her characters, and in Longbourn they are ones who previously existed in the background only," said Focus Features' James Schamus.

"By compellingly exploring new avenues in the world of Pride and Prejudice, she has fashioned a tale of a calibre that film-makers dream about."

Two centuries on from her death, Austen's novels continue to inspire adaptations and spin-offs both in book and film form.

A contemporary version of Sense and Sensibility, written by Joanna Trollope, will be published later this year, one of six Austen re-workings by modern-day writers.

This year's Sundance Film Festival saw the premiere of Austenland, a comedy about a girl obsessed with the BBC's 1995 production of Pride and Prejudice.

Longbourn will be published in hardback and e-book format later this year, with a paperback release to follow in 2014.
